Motivation exists on a spectrum between upside and stability.

Some of your employees are motivated by their income potential. Sales people on commission. Directors with profit sharing.

Some of your employees are motivated by stability. Salaried positions with defined roles.

Entrepreneuers generally exist on the extreme end of upside. But you may not have considered that some of your non-commissioned employees are also motivated by upside.

Consider stock options, profit sharing, commission, phantom stock, or some other kind of performance incentive for your top people. No matter what LinkedIn tells you, people are motivated by money - whether it’s stable income or uncapped potential.

If you have engineers, managers, other ICs, or admin staff who are motivated by upside, you never know what they might come up with once they have skin in the game.
